The Chief Brief
About the publication

A clearer view of the systems shaping American life

The Chief Brief is an independent weekly publication examining the institutions, policies, and economic forces shaping life and opportunity in America.

Each issue looks beyond the week’s headlines to ask: What changed? Why does it matter? Who is likely to feel it first? And what should we be watching next?

From work, housing, and technology to elections, education, and the economy, The Chief Brief connects decisions made in legislatures, agencies, courts, and boardrooms to the ways people live, work, build wealth, and exercise power.

The publication pays particular attention to the implications for Black communities because institutional and economic shifts are often felt there earlier and more sharply. Looking closely at those effects can reveal risks, opportunities, and policy choices with consequences across communities, industries, and the country as a whole.

The Chief Brief is nonpartisan and grounded in credible evidence, historical context, and the experiences of people too often left out of institutional decision-making. Its purpose is not to tell readers what to think. It is to make the forces shaping the country easier to see, understand, and question.
